We’ve driven past the New Brighton Bakery so many times – it’s hard to miss, painted bright orange, and it’s been on our must-try-this-place-out-list for a very long time, we finally stopped by to take a photograph because the Nifty Colour Project colour is currently orange, and promised ourselves we would be back this week. We can finally tick it off the list because we stopped by for lunch today. It’s going to be a Nifty tradition, once a week we are going try out a new coffee or lunch place, preferably in our hood Woodstock, and then we’ll let you know what we think.. (more…)

This weekend Rowan took over our Instagram account – we’ll do a blog post all about him – and showed us a sneak peek of a new coffee spot opening in our hood, Flat Mountain coffee roasters. We haven’t been this excited about a new shop opening, since The Creamery announced they were opening in Salt River (1 October is the day) and we were especially happy because since moving from Side Street Studios – where we were right next door to Rosetta, The Field Office & Superette – there have been no great places to grab a cuppa coffee within walking distance of our new studio space in Buchanan Square. To make things even better Flat Mountain is literally across the road from us in Sir Lowry Road so we’ll be popping in regularly.
Yesterday was their first day of business and we grabbed a cappuccino, espresso and bottle of JuiceBox cloudy apple juice. The space is bigger than expected, great wooden paneling, mild steel stools & thick rope lights – it’s super clean but not too minimal, there is also a pop of yellow in the form of a comfy couch. For their first week they’re running a special – R10 for all coffees, so go pop in and check it out, you can also pay via SnapScan which we love! They’ll be expanding their menu in the coming weeks with some sandwich offers soon, cos as much as we love The Kitchen, with their latest round of price increases means they’re not nearly as affordable as they used to be..
Who The Kitchen
Where 111 Sir Lowry Rd, Cape Town
When Monday – Friday – 8:00am to 3:30pm.
When taking a stroll along Woodstock Main road it’s hard not to notice the buzz that surrounds the area, and in the middle of the bustling main road where the rather infamous eatery, The Kitchen is located.
The Kitchen was started by Karen Dudley and has seen the likes of the Obama’s, who have eaten there, yes, those Obama’s. Rumour has it, that they stopped there after their security mistook The Kitchen for the famous Test Kitchen, but loved the food anyway and a newspaper clipping of the incident is framed outside.
As the gentrification of Woodstock continues, so do the culinary choices on offer around the neighbourhood. Yesterday we were among the first cheese lovers in Cape Town to experience the gooey goodness of Woodstock’s latest offering: piping-hot grilled cheese sarmies, delivered to your desk and thus, your face – as the Twitter bio of The Grilled Cheese Club sagely informs us.
