Jess is one of those people we feel like we’ve been following on Instagram, literally forever. She always had a really beautiful and well curated account, with a few thousand followers and one day we had another look and her account had suddenly just blown up, she currently has 45,000 followers – how crazy ahmazing? We met her for the first time at the 1st Nifty x Gummie Insta-walk and were blown away by the tiny hot pink digital camera she was shooting on.. We’ve wanted her to do a Nifty Weekend Takeover for ages and last weekend she did it, from lunch at our favourite Babylonstoren, ice-cream at The Creamery, creepy cool plants, sunset perfection and chilled Sunday afternoons at the Waterfront she showed us a really good time in the Mother City!
We caught up with her to chat about her Instagram blowing up, what camera she currently shoots on, her best editing app (it’s only one) and her favourite people to follow!
1. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’m currently studying Medical BioScience at UWC in Cape Town as I have always been interested about how the human body functions. I’m currently in the last year of my degree and am hoping to do my BSc Honours in 2016 (possibly in forensics or anatomical pathology). On the contrary I love taking photographs in my spare time. I love fashion, vintage anything, nature, coffee and discovering new places.
2. You’ve got over 45,000 followers on Instagram, which is pretty crazy, when/how did your account blow up?
My account blew up during December last year (2014) when I became one of Instagram’s suggested users which was one of my goals (which brought me pure happiness).
Spent the morning / early afternoon at the lovely Babylonstoren. Love going on mini adventures and discovering new places
Perfect afternoon light x weird but wonderful plant from Woolworths
3. We got a sneak peek at your camera at the 1st Insta-walk, what do you currently use to shoot your photographs? How much time do you spend shooting, curating and editing every week?
I’m currently using a Canon 100D which is what I have been shooting with for the past month and a half (its amazing compared to the old pink camera (Coolpix Nikon) I was using that you guys had seen?!). I also used to use my Samsung S4 Zoom but not so much anymore as my goal is for better quality photographs. The amount of time I spend on shooting and editing depends totally on free time (if I’m not writing tests and have time to go out and do things). Would love an iPhone 6!
4. Who are your favourite people to follow on Instagram?
My favourite people on Instagram to follow are: @thelouwdown, @diaryofzach, @hlonicoleman, @alex_duplessis, @emmajanementeath, @thefashionfreckle and of course Nifty 😉
Queen Victoria Street, Cape Town
A perfect 26 degrees in Cape Town today. Love the Waterfront on a Sunday
5. What is your favourite photo editing apps?
The only app I use to edit my photographs with is VSCO (surprise!?) – Over time I’ve bought the different edits and love, love, love them.
6. What is your greatest extravagance?
My absolute weakness are SHOES, because enough is never enough.
7. What is your most treasured possession?
Definitely my Daniel Wellington watch (it’s my baby), my cell phone (no matter what the make, I always have to have my cell phone with me or I feel like something is missing) and my camera.
Nothing better than a scoop of chocolate ice-cream from The Creamery
8. What is your idea of perfect happiness?
My idea of perfect happiness would be to travel anywhere in the world whenever, with whoever and for how ever long I like (and having unlimited cash of course!).
9. Macarons or cupcakes? Sprinkles or chocolate chips? Tea or coffee?
It has to be cupcakes, with chocolate chips (CHOCOLATE ANYTHING!) and definitely coffee although it can’t console the way tea can!
Lastly, a darling sunset
