Carla has been someone we’ve had our Instagram eye on for ages, we met her for the first time at the Nifty x Gummie Insta-walk and she was just as lovely as we had imagined, in IRL! She recently celebrated the one year mark of starting her own business Carla Likes Photos, yip she takes such gorgeous photos, we absolutely could not wait for her weekend takeover and it did not disappoint. From Honest Chocolate cafe adventures – we’re so obsessed with that place, to Sunday drives and showing us her perfect way of ending off the weekend, we really enjoyed this little sneak peek into her life.
We caught up with her to chat about starting her own business, what she shoots her photographs with, her favouriting editing app (it’s ours too) and the people she loves following on Instagram
1. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Well, I’m a 23 year old photography-obsessed, caffine-addicted girl from Cape Town. I do photography full-time (and a little design work here and there).
2. Saw on your Instagram that your business Carla Likes Photos is 1 year old, what made you take the plunge and start your business and what have some of the best experiences from your 1st year as an entrepreneur been?
I did a BA in Applied Design (which is just a fancy way of saying I studied a mix of photography, art direction and marketing). Once I graduated photography was still what I felt most passionate about so I decided to be intentional about it and start my own little business.
Honestly, the best part of it all is the people you get to photograph. It always feels amazing when people trust you enough to document their milestones or are willing to be brave and put themselves in front of your lens. I love being a fly in on the wall and just document things as they happen. Nothing beats capturing the moments that people didn’t even know were happening.
Desk things. I bought these lilies for my mom but ended up stealing them back for myself because of how good they smell. Sorry mom!
3. You’ve got a beautifully curated Instagram account, what camera do you shoot with and how long do you spend shooting and editing photographs for your Instagram?
The weekend attire. Comfiest ever!
4. Who are your favourite people to follow on Instagram?
I love design and photography based accounts. So, @jasminedowling @mrbenbrown @himichellewhite @benjhaish and of course, everyone’s favourite, @nifty250_.
ALSO, another very random account I’m obsessed with is @doughboysdoughnuts. It’s literally just pictures of doughnuts but it’s made me want to travel all the way to Melbourne just to try these damn doughnuts.
5. What is your favourite photo editing apps?
I use VSCOcam 90% of the time but Instagram itself also has come pretty cool editing features.
6. What is your greatest extravagance?
The other day I worked out how much I spend on take-away coffee in a month and it was a little crazy. And books. I spending a disgusting amount of money on books.
First things first!
Protea explosion on Adderley street
7. What is your most treasured possession?
My most treasured possession is definitely my family (I’m not sure if they count as a possession?) I have one of those typical large and loud Portuguese families and I love them crazy amounts.
8. What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Being able to travel whenever are wherever I feel like. Can you imagine?
9. What is your absolute pet peeve?
Mmm… the price of petrol. Filling up my car breaks my little heart.
Honest Chocolate is my favourite place for treats. I’ve been coming here a little too often. The coconut dream = WINNER!
10. Macarons or cupcakes? Sprinkles or chocolate chips? Tea or coffee?
Macarons, sprinkles and coffee. I feel very strongly about all three.
Sundays are for lazy drives. Preferably with no destination in mind
Ending off my weekend the best way I know how. Thanks for having me, Nifty!
