A few months ago, The Creamery announced via Twitter that they were opening a new store in Salt River, an announcement that pretty much made our year. The Creamery are to Cape Town ice-cream lovers, what Paul Ballen is to Johannesburg – pure goodness. Whilst we’ve had The Creamery many times at events like Design Indaba, their Newlands store was always a little bit of a schlep for us lazy Capetonians..
Their brand new store which is also their new HQ opened last week while we were away in JHB for iPhoneography, which is why, today for lunch there was only one thing on the menu – ice-cream please! The new store is situated at 97 Durham Avenue, Salt River which is also now home to Origin, The Taproom, Quirk + Red&Yellow – best of all it’s just down the road from the Nifty Studio in Woodstock – we have yet to ascertain whether this is a good or bad thing.. Think wallet & waistline issues.
The menu is indulgent, you’ve got your ‘normal’ ice-cream scoops with the option of a tub or cone – the current flavours are: 65% Chocolate, Sea Salt Caramel, Peanut butter, Rosetta Roastery Coffee, Sweet Cream, Honey Spiced Pecan, Cookie Dough, Strawberry & Salt River of Dreams. Talya had a double scoop of cookie dough & sea salted caramel, while Lucas went for the 65% chocolate & coffee and we can vouch for how damn delicious they were..
Now to the super indulgent part of the menu, think waffles with ice-cream, but then you can also add sauces like chocolate, honey & salted caramel, small toppings like toasted almonds, toasted coconut, marshmallow and then onto big toppings like brulee banana. Oh and lets not forget their sundaes – like smores, banana splits & chocolate brownies!
If you’re looking for R5 soft serves with Flake, this is not the place for you, if you’re looking for something special, a great location, ice-cream made with lots of love, rotating flavours and would also like to support young local business, The Creamery should be your next lunch spot! If you aren’t into ice-cream – whaaat, is that even possible?! – they also do great Rosetta Roastery espressos, macchiatos, lattes you name it, as well as hot chocolate & milkshakes.
Basically: heaven just opened in Salt River.
