If you’re quite in the know about who’s who in the Instagram zoo (and what a zoo it is, with the amount of fluffy, four-legged users floating around the network – but I digress), it’s likely you already follow Ofentse Mwase, a.k.a. @unclescrooch. As one of the most promising young filmmakers working in Johannesburg, Ofentse’s Instagrams convey an other-wordliness, a dream-like quality and a grand scale usually reserved for the big screen.
1. When did you start instagramming?
I started instagramming the day it got released for the Android platform.
2. What are your favourite apps?
Snapseed is my number 1 go to app, every photo I’ve uploaded on my iPhone has went through it. Other favs include VSCOcam, AvgCamPro and PicFX.
3. What photography/editing hints and tips do you have for our community?
I’m not a great editor, but always shoot my photos with the edit in mind, especially 1×1 ratio crop. Try not to use too much HDR, add a little bit just to boost the overall ambience of the shot, just refrain from overusing it. It works to a certain limit. If all else fails, try black and white.
5. What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Going on Holiday with my wife(Nelisiwe) and son (Ree), and just spending time with them and taking creative photos together. Ree is always so great to shoot.
6. What is your greatest extravagance?
Definitely camera gear. I find myself spending crazy amounts of money on buying great film gadgets. I can’t resist.
7. Which talent would you most like to have?
I’m happy with the one I have, being able to create beautiful images with a camera, I would love for this talent to keep growing.
8. What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Being an great father for my son. And having a family, what are we without loved ones. These are my proudest achievements.
9. What is your most treasured possession?
Definately my Canon 5D camera. I love that camera. But geez my iPhone is also battling for that position, I would say I love them both equally
10. Which historical figure do you most identify with?
Stanley Kubrick, my dream is to emotionally affect as many people with Film as much as this great director has.
11. When and where were you happiest?
13 September 2012, the day my son was born. Nothing can ever match what I felt that day. Nothing!
